Sauna Cleaning – What to Use and How to Do It
Cleaning a sauna is done with a diluted product applied to dampened benches, floors and plastics. The surface is then rinsed with clean water. At Baseini.NET we offer two products for this job: Saunareiniger for routine cleaning and Chemosan for disinfection. Both are concentrates and are diluted with water.
In short:
- Saunareiniger is for benches, floors and plastics in Finnish and infrared saunas and is diluted from 1:10 to 1:30.
- Saunareiniger is not suitable for acrylic.
- The Chemosan disinfectant is diluted 1:20, sprayed onto the area and not rinsed off.
- Both products have a eucalyptus scent and come in a 1 l pack.
- Read the label before use: both products carry hazard warnings.
Why is regular sauna cleaning necessary?
The wood in a sauna absorbs moisture and sweat with every sauna session. Regular cleaning of the benches and floors keeps the sauna fresh, hygienic and pleasant to use.
Heat and humidity create an environment in which hygiene is especially important. That is why a sauna is cleaned with a product designed for it.
It is best to leave the sauna wood natural – without paints or chemicals on it. You can find more about the wood, the stove and the equipment in the article on choosing materials and equipment for a sauna.
What do you need to clean a sauna?
To clean a sauna you need a cleaning product, water and, if you wish, a sponge. You will find all of this in the sauna products and fragrances category.
- Routine cleaning product: Saunareiniger 1 l is for benches, floors and plastics.
- Disinfectant: Chemosan 1 l is free of aldehyde and phenol and is antistatic.
- Sponge: the Azuro sponge is sold in sets of 2 and is also suitable for saunas.
- Clean water for diluting the product and for rinsing.

The Azuro sponge is suitable for use with a cleaning product. First test it on an inconspicuous spot and do not press hard on delicate surfaces.
How do you clean a sauna step by step?
Cleaning the sauna takes four steps with Saunareiniger and one additional step with Chemosan if you also want disinfection.
- Dilute Saunareiniger with water at 1:10 to 1:30.
- Dampen the soiled surface – a bench, floor or plastic part.
- Clean the surface with the solution, using an Azuro sponge if needed.
- Rinse with clean water.
- For disinfection, prepare a Chemosan solution at 1:20 and spray the area. Do not rinse.
Saunareiniger must not be used on acrylic. If the sauna has acrylic surfaces, do not clean them with it.

Which product is suitable for which surface?
Saunareiniger is for routine cleaning, while Chemosan is for disinfection and for cleaning a wider range of appliances and surfaces. The table shows the differences.
| Indicator | Saunareiniger | Chemosan |

If the sauna is a Finnish one, also take a look at Finnish saunas, and for cabins – infrared saunas. The products are suitable for both types.
Does a sauna need disinfecting?
Disinfecting the sauna is an addition to routine cleaning. Regular disinfection of the benches, wall cladding and surfaces keeps the wellness area pleasant and safe.
Chemosan is a universal disinfectant for saunas, infrared cabins, solariums and acrylic hot tubs. It is sprayed on and not rinsed off, so working with it is quick. The same product can also be used for the acrylic hot tub in the wellness area.
What warnings apply to the products?
Both products carry hazard warnings, and you must read the label before use. Saunareiniger causes skin irritation and serious eye damage.
Chemosan causes severe skin burns and eye damage. It is also very toxic to the aquatic environment.
The information on the product pages is for guidance only, so always follow the instructions on the packaging. For the rules of conduct in the sauna, see sauna etiquette.
